The agri-food system and rural territories are currently undergoing a profound transformation, suspended between the need to feed a growing global population and the urgency to regenerate inner areas affected by depopulation. In this context, the transition toward FoodSystem 5.0 is not only a technological challenge, but also a social and cultural process. From data management and blockchain applications in heroic olive growing to the enhancement of viticultural excellence, a clear need emerges to bridge the gap between frontier innovations and traditional knowledge. Marginal areas thus become laboratories of the future, where the phenomena of “restanza” and “tornanza” demonstrate that it is possible to inhabit territories in new ways, turning sustainability and digitalization into tools for resilience and energy autonomy.
Rural Hack acts as an accelerator of this ecosystem, facilitating the encounter between academic research, institutions, and productive communities through a multidisciplinary and participatory approach. Its core objective is to democratize technological innovation, making it accessible and generative for small producers and younger generations. Through high-level training programs (Summer and Seasonal Schools), Smart Agriculture workshops, and international networking initiatives such as Agrifood Future, the project aims to develop shared territorial know-how. The ultimate goal is to promote circular and social economy models that enhance the complexity of the food system, ensuring environmental sustainability while strengthening the identity and competitiveness of rural communities in global markets.
